Open Design Motion is the free, open-source motion design feature of Open Design, and it turns one written prompt into an editable motion video and an MP4.
It shipped as Open Design v0.25.0 on 15 October 2026 under the codename "OpenDesign Motion", and the code is on GitHub at nexu-io/open-design under the Apache-2.0 licence.
I plugged it into my Agent OS, and one prompt built a paper-cutout trailer in the background while I worked on other things.
This page is the quick start, plus how Open Design Motion fits an Agent OS workflow.

Open Design calls itself "the 1st collaborative AI design agent workspace", and it is local-first and open source.
Motion is the part of the workspace that makes videos and animations.
Your agent writes the animation as code, and HyperFrames, HeyGen's open-source video framework, renders that code into an MP4.
Because the video is code, you can change one line, one colour or one scene without rebuilding everything.
| Fact | What the official sources say |

This is the fastest route from nothing to your first exported video.
| Step | What you do | Where |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Download the desktop app for macOS or Windows, or run it from source on Linux. | open-design.ai or GitHub Releases |
| 2 | Let the app scan the agents and CLIs already on your machine. | First launch |
| 3 | Pick an agent or a free model, such as one of the free models inside OpenCode. | Agent picker |
| 4 | Open Motion Design from Home. | Home or Community |
| 5 | Choose a template or one of the five motion examples. | Motion Design |
| 6 | Write one prompt, then set the BPM and the style. | Composer |
| 7 | Preview, check the code view, then export the MP4 or share it. | Project view |
The README recommends the desktop app as the zero-config route, with no Node, no pnpm and no clone needed.
macOS on Apple Silicon or Intel and Windows x64 get native apps from open-design.ai or GitHub Releases.
Linux has no prebuilt app in the official releases yet, so the README says to run it from source.
git clone https://github.com/nexu-io/open-design.git
cd open-design
corepack enable && pnpm install
pnpm tools-dev run web
The README says to open the URL that tools-dev prints, with Node ~24 and pnpm 10.33.x installed.
If you want Open Design inside a coding agent with no UI, the README's one-liner is od mcp install <agent>.
On a Mac, the README warns that od can resolve to Apple's built-in octal-dump tool, so copy the snippet from Settings → MCP server instead.

🔥 Want the exact Open Design Motion setup I run inside my Agent OS?
Inside the AI Profit Boardroom you get the installable Agent OS, step-by-step video tutorials, four coaching calls a week and 3,400+ members building real automations.
Open Design doesn't ship its own agent, and the README says the agents already on your PATH are the design engine.
When I opened it, it scanned what I already had installed, such as OpenCode and Hermes Agent.
You can switch between agents and CLIs such as Hermes Agent, Kimi CLI and Antigravity, and there is a local mode as well.
You don't need Opus 5.5 for this job.
Inside OpenCode I showed free models such as LongCat, MiMo v2.6, Nemotron 3.5 Super, GLM-5.3 Flash and DeepSeek V4.1 Flash, which were free in OpenCode when I recorded.
I often use those same free models as the brain for Hermes, so they slot straight into an Agent OS that already runs them.
Free offers change, so check the OpenCode model list on the day you set up.
My guide to the free OpenCode engine shows how I run a zero-cost coding agent.
I plugged Open Design into my own Agent OS and treated it as the design department.
| Agent OS job | What Open Design Motion adds | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Daily social content | One prompt becomes an editable motion design and an MP4. | The editing bottleneck stops being the reason you don't post. |
| Free-model work | It runs on agents and models you already have, including free ones. | You can keep Opus-class spend for the jobs that really need it. |
| Running jobs in parallel | Several projects build in the background at once. | You queue a week of reels while you work on something else. |
| One shared workspace | Every project landed in my Agent OS workspace with previews. | Your motion library stays organised instead of scattered in downloads. |
| Brand consistency | You can give brand colours or feed an old example to restyle. | Every video can match the brand without a designer re-doing it. |
| Distribution | I hand the finished MP4 to Blotato. | Blotato posts it automatically and shows which platforms perform best. |
The rule I follow is simple: the agent crew decides what to make, Open Design makes it, and Blotato ships it.
My first prompt asked for a 20-second paper cutout story that worked as a trailer for Open Design.
It built the whole motion design in the background, and I could preview it, open the code view, export it and share it.
My second prompt asked for a 20-second high-energy reel titled "The AI Profit Boardroom community is the best to learn AI automation".
For that one I picked a template, wrote the prompt, and set the BPM and the style before sending it.
Both projects built at the same time, and my recent projects showed up with previews.
From what I saw, the results were genuinely better than what my normal human team can do, and that is my honest opinion from my own tests.

Inside the AI Profit Boardroom you get the installable Agent OS, step-by-step video tutorials, four coaching calls a week and 3,400+ members building real automations.
Home gives you Motion Design alongside slide decks, documents, images, websites, HyperFrames and live artifacts, which are live dashboards you can share.
The release ships five bundled motion examples, and each one comes with its own scripts, fonts, audio and previews.
| Motion example | A good first use |
|---|---|
| Motion Future | Use it for a forward-looking brand teaser. |
| Product Promo | Use it for a short promo of one product or offer. |
| Showreel | Use it to stitch your best work into one reel. |
| UI Morph | Use it to show an app or dashboard changing state. |
| Visual Lesson | Use it to explain one idea for a course or community. |
Motion skills are available from the @ picker in the composer.
When you ask for a video, you get editable source files and an MP4, while interactive animations stay runnable HTML.
Video export checks that the MP4 can play, and a failed export keeps the editable source available.
Sound stops when you leave the active preview, which helps when you hop between projects.
You can feed it a previous example and ask it to turn that into a motion design.
You can give it your brand colours and ask it to restyle the whole video.

The core idea is similar, because you describe a video and AI builds it.
I prefer Open Design, because it looks more interesting and clean to me and it is easier to organise all my motion designs in one place.
It is also open source, so you choose the agent, the model and where your projects live.
My guide to Claude Code's /design command is useful if you already work inside Claude.
I post the videos automatically with Blotato.
Blotato's analytics show me which platforms perform best, so I know where to double down.
The full loop is to write the script, let the agent make the motion design, and post it.
Linux has no prebuilt desktop app yet, so Linux users run it from source.
Output quality depends on the model you connect, so try two free models before you judge the tool.
The free OpenCode models were free when I recorded, and that can change.
An optional paid Design Plan with hosted models exists, and you can skip it if your own agents already work.
The README says scrubbed safety and reliability telemetry is always on, while product analytics and session replay are consent-gated.
My "better than my team" line is an opinion from my own tests, so run your own prompts before changing your workflow.

Yes. The tool is free and open source under Apache-2.0 and runs with your own agents, your own API key or free models. An optional paid Design Plan with hosted models exists, but you do not need it.
