Generative engine optimization vs SEO isn't a choice between two strategies, because GEO sits on top of SEO and depends on it.
SEO gets your pages indexed and ranked, and GEO gets the AI answer to name you once it reads those pages.
My verdict is simple: build the SEO base first, then run GEO as part of the same weekly loop.
This quick start shows the comparison, the metrics for each side and the Agent OS loop I use to run both.
If you'd like help first, book a free one-to-one GEO, AEO AI audit and get a custom game plan.
This table is the whole comparison in one place, with the job an Agent OS can take on for each side.
| Factor | SEO | GEO |
|---|---|---|
| Full name | Search engine optimisation. | Generative engine optimisation. |
| Goal | Rank a page in the search results. | Get your business named or cited inside an AI answer. |
| Where it shows | The list of results on Google or Bing. | Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude. |
| Winners per search | A full page, so position seven still gets some clicks. | Maybe one to three names, so there's no room for number seven. |
| Main metric | Clicks, impressions and position. | Mentions, citations and accuracy of the description. |
| Main tool | Google Search Console. | A weekly prompt log. |
| Depends on the other | No, it works on its own. | Yes, because AI answers lean on pages that already rank. |
| Agent OS job | Analyse Search Console data and fix pages. | Log AI answers and draft case-study pages. |
The row that matters most is the dependency row, because it tells you GEO and SEO are one loop rather than two strategies.
SEO stands for search engine optimisation, which is getting your pages crawled, indexed and ranked.
GEO stands for generative engine optimisation, which is getting your business named when someone asks Google AI, Gemini or ChatGPT a question.
The term GEO comes from a 2023 paper called GEO: Generative Engine Optimization, by a team from Princeton University, IIT Delhi and two independent researchers.
It describes generative engines as tools that pull information from several sources and summarise it with a large language model.
The AI reads the pages that rank and sums up what they say.
I explain it like five friends recommending the same restaurant.
If five good pages in the top ten say the same name, the AI repeats that name.
Google's AI features and your website page says a page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet before it can be a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode.
It also says there are no additional requirements, no special schema and no AI text files needed.
So your SEO decides which pages the AI reads, and your GEO decides what those pages say about you.
Old SEO gave people ten blue links, and ranking seventh still brought in some clicks.
AI answers usually name one to three businesses, so there's no room for number seven.
You can rank on page one and still be missing from the answer above the results.
That's the gap GEO fills.
In an Agent OS, I don't run GEO and SEO as separate projects.
I run one weekly loop where agents do the collecting and drafting, and I keep the judgement calls.
| Stage of the loop | SEO side | GEO side | Who does it |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Collect | Export Search Console data to a CSV. | Run the saved buyer questions in AI tools and log the answers. | An agent, on a schedule. |
| 2. Analyse | Find pages and queries with impressions but weak clicks. | Find questions where you rank but aren't named. | An agent writes the report. |
| 3. Draft | Improve titles, answers and internal links. | Lead each page with a real case study. | An agent drafts, you supply the proof. |
| 4. Spread | Earn links and mentions. | Publish different angles on other sites and platforms. | You choose where it goes. |
| 5. Check | Fact-check titles, descriptions and schema. | Fact-check every claim and number. | You, by hand. |
| 6. Measure | Clicks and impressions next week. | Who the AI names next week. | An agent compares the two logs. |
The loop works because the GEO side reuses the SEO side's data instead of starting from zero.

In my latest video I show this loop running on free tools.
I use my Agent OS, but the same process works in Hermes Agent directly, which is free and open source.
For the brain I used OpenCode, and DeepSeek V4.1 Flash was free inside OpenCode when I recorded.
1. Export your Google Search Console data to a CSV, which is free.
2. Give the file to Hermes and ask it to analyse what's actually working and give you keyword and topic ideas to rank inside AI search engines.
3. Read the report it builds in the workspace, which on my screen showed clicks, brand share of clicks, non-brand click-through rate, the month's clicks and a verdict on my best pages.
4. Give Hermes an SEO skill and access to your sites, such as WordPress or Netlify, so it can publish directly.
5. Fact-check every page by hand before it goes live.
My SEO skill is roughly a 100-point checklist, and it writes everything from a case-study angle.
The demo prompt I used asked it to create an SEO article with the SEO skill for the keyword "GEO examples" and publish it to aiprofitboardroom.com.
One honest limit is that this is Google organic data, because Google and the AI engines don't report AI traffic well yet.

The cleanest way to see generative engine optimization vs SEO is to look at what each one reports.
| Metric | Layer | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Clicks and impressions | SEO | The Search Console performance report. |
| Click-through rate | SEO | The Search Console performance report. |
| Named in the AI answer | GEO | Your weekly prompt log. |
| Cited as a source | GEO | The links shown beside the AI answer. |
| Accuracy of the description | GEO | Your weekly prompt log. |
| Leads | Both | Your own records or analytics. |
Google counts traffic from AI Overviews and AI Mode inside the normal Search Console totals under the "Web" search type.
There's no separate AI report from Google, which is why the prompt log sits beside Search Console in the loop.
An agent is perfect for the log, because it can run the same questions every week without getting bored.
This is the skill file I'd load into an Agent OS so the loop runs every week without you remembering the steps.
GEO + SEO WEEKLY SKILL 1. Load this week's Search Console CSV and last week's AI answer log from shared memory. 2. SEO pass: list pages with high impressions and low clicks, and queries sitting just off page one. 3. GEO pass: run each saved buyer question in the chosen AI tools and record who is named, which links are cited and whether our description is accurate. 4. Cross-check: flag every question where we rank on page one but are not named in the AI answer. 5. For each flagged question, pick the real case study from the test log that answers it best. 6. Draft one answer-first page or update per flagged question, leading with that case study. 7. Flag every number, name, title, description, schema field and alt text for human fact-checking. 8. Save the report and drafts, then summarise the three biggest changes since last week. NEVER: invent case studies or results, publish without approval, add "AI text files" for Google, or promise AI placements.
The cross-check in step four is the bit most people miss, because it finds the pages where SEO is already done and only GEO is missing.

The right split depends on where your site is today, and this is my rule of thumb rather than a formula from a study.
If most of your key pages aren't indexed yet, nearly all the effort goes into SEO, because the AI can't cite a page Google hasn't indexed.
If some pages rank on page one but AI answers name competitors, split the effort between both sides of the loop.
If you rank well but you're missing from AI answers, most of the effort goes into GEO, because the gap is agreement and proof.
The agent's cross-check tells you which of those three you're in, so you don't have to guess.
I call my GEO system the answer engine, and it has three moves.
Be the source means every page carries a real case study, because the AI can't write about a test only you ran.
Be everywhere means several sites and platforms point to the same answer from different angles, and my subreddit, AI SEO Insider, ranks on page one too.
Be first means publishing within 24 hours of a topic appearing, like "Jev architecture" and "Jev waitlist" the weekend Jev AI dropped.
The GEO paper points the same way, because its strongest methods were adding citations, quotations and statistics to content, while keyword stuffing performed poorly.
In my GEO video, the AI Overview for "best HARO agency" links Goldie Agency first, and Goldie Agency ranks first organically too.
That's both layers working on the same pages.
Google's AI Overview for "best geo expert" names me first and cites several of my pages.
One of my sites went from zero to about 1,300 Google clicks a day, and on one day it got over 9,600 impressions inside Google's AI features.
These are my results from my own screens, and one site flopped, so treat them as proof the loop can work rather than a promise.
For more examples, my GEO examples guide breaks down all four searches.
Google updated its page on using generative AI content on 1 October 2026.
It says it's "critical to manually factcheck and review all AI-generated content" before publishing.
That review covers titles, meta descriptions, structured data and image alt text as well.
So the fact-check stage in the loop is a human job, and no agent should skip it.

Nobody can guarantee what an AI answer will say, and that includes me.
AI answers change, so this week's log can look different next month.
An agent speeds up the collecting and drafting, but the case studies and fact-checks have to come from you.

SEO ranks your pages in the search results, while GEO gets your business named or cited inside an AI answer. GEO sits on top of SEO because AI answers lean on the pages that already rank.
No. Google says a page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet before it can appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, so SEO is still the entry ticket.
Use Search Console for clicks, impressions and position, and a weekly prompt log for who the AI names, which pages it cites and how accurately it describes you.
Agents can export and analyse data, log AI answers and draft case-study pages. You still supply the real results, approve what goes live and fact-check every page by hand.
Not for Google's AI features. Google says there is no special schema and no AI text file needed for AI Overviews or AI Mode.
No. It is a one-to-one call where my team looks at your site, your competitors and the keywords you're closest to winning, then gives you a custom game plan.
Load the skill file, run the loop for one week and let the cross-check show you which side needs the most work.

That's how I'd settle generative engine optimization vs SEO for any site.
