Generative engine optimization vs AIO is mostly a naming question, because AIO can mean "AI optimisation" or Google AI Overviews.
If it means AI optimisation, it's practically GEO, and if it means AI Overviews, it's one slice of GEO for one Google feature.
Google says AI Overviews have no extra requirements beyond solid SEO, so one workflow can cover both meanings.
This quick start shows the difference in a table, what Google actually says and the Agent OS workflow I'd run every week.
If you'd like help first, book a free one-to-one GEO, AEO AI audit and get a custom game plan.
This table puts GEO next to both meanings of AIO, with the Agent OS job each one turns into.
| GEO | AIO meaning "AI optimisation" | AIO meaning "AI Overviews" | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it is | Generative engine optimisation, getting named or cited in AI answers. | A broad label for showing up in AI search tools and assistants. | Optimising to appear in Google's AI Overviews. |
| Origin | A 2023 research paper on arXiv. | Industry usage with no single official definition. | Shorthand for a named Google Search feature. |
| Tools covered | AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude. | Usually the same set. | One Google feature. |
| Official rulebook | None, though the paper defines the term. | None. | Google's AI features documentation. |
| Relationship to GEO | It's the whole job. | Nearly a synonym. | A subset for one engine. |
| Agent OS job | Log answers across every tool and draft case-study pages. | The same as GEO. | Run Google's eligibility checklist and watch Search Console. |
If someone says "AIO", the first job is to ask which of the two columns they mean.
GEO stands for generative engine optimisation.
The term comes from a 2023 paper called GEO: Generative Engine Optimization, by a team from Princeton University, IIT Delhi and two independent researchers, accepted to KDD 2024.
It describes generative engines as tools that gather information from several sources and summarise it with a large language model.
In plain words, GEO is getting your business named when someone asks Google AI, Gemini or ChatGPT a question.
AIO is used in two ways, and neither has one official owner.
Some people use it to mean AI optimisation, which is a broad label for showing up in AI search tools and assistants.
Used that way, it's practically the same job as GEO.
Other people use it as shorthand for Google AI Overviews, the AI-written summary at the top of some Google searches.
Used that way, optimising for AIO is one slice of GEO for one Google feature.
Google's AI features and your website page is the official source for the AI Overviews meaning.
It says the best practices for SEO remain relevant, and there are no additional requirements or special optimisations needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode.
A page must be indexed and eligible to show in Google Search with a snippet to be a supporting link.
Google says you don't need new machine-readable files, AI text files or special schema.org markup.
It says AI Overviews and AI Mode may use a "query fan-out" technique, running several related searches across subtopics to build a response.
It also says AI Overviews only show when they add something to classic Search, and that AI Mode and AI Overviews may use different models and techniques.
So the AI Overviews side of the work is mostly an eligibility checklist plus good pages, which is perfect for an agent.
These are the best practices Google lists, split into what an agent can check and what you still decide.
| Check from Google's AI features page | What an agent can do | What you still do |
|---|---|---|
| The page is indexed and eligible to show with a snippet. | Flag pages missing from the index in a Search Console export. | Fix the cause and request indexing. |
| Crawling is allowed in robots.txt and by your CDN or host. | Read robots.txt and flag Googlebot blocks. | Decide what should stay blocked. |
| Content is findable through internal links. | List orphan pages with no internal links. | Choose where the links belong. |
| Important content is in text form. | Flag pages where key facts only appear in images. | Rewrite those facts as text. |
| Structured data matches the visible text. | Compare schema fields with the page copy. | Approve every correction. |
| Merchant Center and Business Profile data is up to date. | Remind you on a schedule to review them. | Update the listings yourself. |
Every row comes from Google's own page, which is why I'd skip anything that isn't on it.

Passing the checklist makes a page eligible, but it doesn't make it the answer.
The AI reads the pages that rank and sums up what they say.
I explain it like five friends recommending the same restaurant, because if five good pages agree on a name, the AI repeats it.
That's where my answer engine comes in, and it works for AI Overviews and every other AI tool at once.
Be the source means every page has a real case study, because the AI can't write about a test only you ran.
Be everywhere means multiple websites, each with a different angle, pointing to the same answer, and my subreddit, AI SEO Insider, ranks on page one too.
Be first means publishing within 24 hours of a topic appearing, like "Jev architecture" and "Jev waitlist" the weekend Jev AI dropped.
The GEO paper points the same way, because its best methods were adding citations, quotations and statistics, while keyword stuffing performed poorly.
In my latest video I show the workflow I use, and the same steps cover GEO and both meanings of AIO.
I use my Agent OS, but it works in Hermes Agent directly, which is free and open source, with OpenCode as the free brain.
1. Export your Google Search Console data to a CSV, which is free.
2. Give it to Hermes and ask it to analyse what's actually working and suggest keyword and topic ideas to rank inside AI search engines.
3. Read the report it builds, which on my screen showed clicks, brand share of clicks, non-brand click-through rate and a verdict on my best pages.
4. Run the AI Overviews checklist above on the pages you want cited.
5. Give Hermes your SEO skill and site access, let it draft case-study pages, and fact-check every one before it publishes.
My SEO skill is roughly a 100-point checklist that writes from a case-study angle.
This is the skill file I'd give an agent so both the AI Overviews checks and the wider GEO log run every week.
GEO + AI OVERVIEWS WEEKLY SKILL 1. Load the saved buyer questions, the brand fact file and last week's answer log from shared memory. 2. AI Overviews pass: run each question in Google, note whether an AI Overview appears, who it names and which links it cites. 3. GEO pass: run the same questions in the other chosen AI tools and record who is named, what is cited and whether our description is accurate. 4. Eligibility pass: check that every page we want cited is indexed, crawlable and has structured data that matches its text. 5. For each question where we are missing, pick the real case study from the test log that answers it best. 6. Draft one answer-first page or update per missing question, plus one different-angle version for another site or platform. 7. Flag every number, name, title, description, schema field and alt text for human fact-checking. 8. Save the log and drafts, then report the three biggest changes since last week. NEVER: add "AI text files" or special markup for Google, invent case studies, publish without approval, or promise AI placements.
The first line of the never list matters, because Google says special files and markup aren't needed for its AI features.

Google counts AI Overviews and AI Mode traffic inside the normal Search Console Performance report, under the "Web" search type.
There's no separate AI Overviews report, and in my video I point out that Google and the AI engines don't report AI traffic well yet.
That's why the agent keeps its own weekly log beside Search Console.
Google also says clicks from results pages with AI Overviews tend to be higher quality, with people more likely to spend longer on the site.
On control, Google says robots.txt rules for Googlebot manage crawling for Search, including its AI features.
To limit what shows from a page, it points to nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet and noindex, and to Google-Extended for some of its other AI systems.
I'd only use those on purpose, because they can also stop a page from appearing as a supporting link.
In my GEO video, Google's AI Overview for "best geo expert" names me first and cites several of my pages.
The AI Overview for "best HARO agency" lists five suppliers and links Goldie Agency first, and Goldie Agency ranks first organically too.
In my latest video, AI Mode lists me first for the best GEO experts to follow in 2026, and I say on screen that it runs Gemini 4 Argon.
Perplexity lists me among GEO experts too, even though I don't really use Perplexity.
One of my sites went from zero to about 1,300 Google clicks a day, with over 9,600 impressions inside Google's AI features on one day.
These are my own results, one site flopped, and nobody can guarantee what an AI answer will say.
My GEO examples guide walks through those searches in more detail.
Google updated its page on using generative AI content on 1 October 2026.
It says it's "critical to manually factcheck and review all AI-generated content" before publishing.
That review covers titles, meta descriptions, structured data and alt text too.
So the agent drafts and checks, and a human signs off every page.

Nobody can guarantee what an AI answer will say, and Google says AI Overviews often don't trigger at all.
AIO doesn't have one agreed meaning, so always confirm which one a brief or proposal uses.
An agent can run the checks and drafts, but the case studies and fact-checks come from you.

GEO is getting named or cited in AI answers across tools. AIO either means AI optimisation, which is nearly the same, or Google AI Overviews, which is one engine inside GEO.
It is used for two things: AI optimisation as a broad label, and Google AI Overviews as a shorthand. It has no single official definition.
No. Google says there are no additional requirements, no AI text files and no special schema needed for AI Overviews or AI Mode.
Yes, agents can run Google's eligibility checks, log AI answers across tools and draft case-study pages. You approve and fact-check every page.
Google counts it inside the normal Search Console Performance report under the Web search type, with no separate AI Overviews report.
No. It is a one-to-one call where my team looks at your site, your competitors and the keywords you're closest to winning, then gives you a custom game plan.
Confirm which AIO you mean, load the skill file and let one weekly loop cover AI Overviews and every other AI tool.

That's the practical way to settle generative engine optimization vs AIO.
