Generative engine optimization vs answer engine optimization comes down to this: AEO is the older term for getting your page picked as the direct answer, and GEO is the newer term for getting your brand cited inside answers that AI writes.
My answer is that GEO isn't better or worse, because the same pages win both, so I run them as one Agent OS loop with two scorecards.
AEO grew up around featured snippets and voice assistants, and GEO was named in a 2023 research paper about AI search engines.
This quick start gives you the comparison table, the history of each term, the overlap and the exact loop I'd hand an agent.
If you want help first, book a free one-to-one GEO, AEO AI audit and get a custom game plan.
This table shows how the two terms differ and what an agent tracks for each one.
| Question | Answer engine optimisation (AEO) | Generative engine optimisation (GEO) |
|---|---|---|
| Full name | Answer engine optimisation. | Generative engine optimisation. |
| Where the term comes from | It is the featured snippet and voice assistant era term. | It was named in the 2023 paper GEO: Generative Engine Optimization. |
| What it targets | It targets one direct answer, such as a featured snippet or a spoken reply. | It targets AI-written replies built from several sources, such as AI Overviews, AI Mode and ChatGPT. |
| What a win looks like | Your page is the answer that gets boxed or read out. | Your business is named or cited inside the reply. |
| What it rewards most | It rewards a short, clear answer right under the question. | It rewards evidence, such as cited sources, quotes and statistics, plus agreement across sites. |
| The agent's scorecard | The agent logs whether you hold the answer box for each question. | The agent logs whether you are named, cited or missing for each prompt. |
The short version is that AEO is the format and GEO is the trust, and one agent loop can serve both.
Answer engine optimisation is the work of shaping a page so a search engine or assistant can lift it as the direct answer.
Google's featured snippets documentation describes those answer boxes as results where the descriptive snippet shows first, and they also appear in the People Also Ask group.
Voice was the other half of that era, and Google still documents speakable structured data as a beta feature that lets Google Assistant read news sections aloud on smart speakers.
I couldn't find one reliable source for who coined "AEO" or when, so I describe it as the snippet and voice assistant era term and leave the date out.
Generative engine optimisation is the work of making your content more visible inside answers that a generative AI writes.
The term comes from GEO: Generative Engine Optimization by Pranjal Aggarwal, Vishvak Murahari, Tanmay Rajpurohit, Ashwin Kalyan, Karthik Narasimhan and Ameet Deshpande.
It was first posted on arXiv on 16 November 2023, and the arXiv page says it was accepted to KDD 2024.
In my own words, GEO is about being the name the AI gives when someone asks it a question.
The paper tested ways to change a page so it shows up more in AI answers, using a benchmark it calls GEO-bench.
It reported visibility gains of up to 40% in generative engine responses.
Its best methods were citing sources, adding quotations and adding statistics, which gave a 30% to 40% relative improvement on its position-adjusted word count measure.
Keyword stuffing didn't help in its results.
It also found that lower-ranked pages gained the most, with the cite sources method lifting visibility by 115.1% for pages ranked fifth.
That's good news for an Agent OS workflow, because sources, quotes and statistics are exactly the kind of structured additions an agent can prepare for you to check.

Google's AI features and your website page says a page must be indexed and eligible to show in Search with a snippet to be a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode.
The same page says there are no additional requirements, no special schema and no AI text files needed.
Both jobs reward an answer in the first two lines, and both reward the same facts about your business everywhere they appear.
Both jobs fall apart if the content is wrong, which is why the fact-check stage in the loop below is a human job.
📞 Want to know which scorecard you're losing on?
Book a free one-to-one GEO, AEO AI audit and my team will look at your site, your competitors and the keywords you're closest to winning.
The first difference is the size of the win, because AEO usually gives one page the whole box while GEO often blends several sources.
The second difference is what earns the spot, because AEO leans on format while GEO leans on evidence and agreement across sites.
The third difference is measurement, because a snippet is easy to see but AI answers change between runs and between tools.
In my Hermes GEO video I point out that Google and the AI engines don't yet report AI traffic well, so a prompt log matters.
Google also says traffic from AI Overviews and AI Mode sits inside the normal Search Console report under the "Web" search type.
This is the fastest way I know to cover both terms without running two separate projects.
| Loop stage | What the agent does | What you do | Which scorecard it feeds |
|---|---|---|---|
| Baseline | It runs the question list and records answer boxes, names and citations. | You approve the question list. | Both scorecards |
| Find | It reads your Search Console CSV and suggests GEO and AEO topics from what already works. | You pick the topics worth a page. | Both scorecards |
| Draft | It writes an answer-first page from your real case study notes. | You supply the real numbers. | AEO first, then GEO |
| Spread | It drafts a different-angle version for another site or platform. | You approve where it goes. | GEO |
| Check | It flags every number, name, title, description, schema field and alt text. | You fact-check every flagged item by hand. | Both scorecards |
| Measure | It re-runs the list two weeks later and reports what changed. | You decide the next three topics. | Both scorecards |
In my video I run this with Hermes Agent, which is free and open source, and OpenCode as the free brain.
When I recorded it, DeepSeek V4.1 Flash was free inside OpenCode, but free offers change, so check before you rely on it.

Once the first pages are live, the work becomes a repeatable loop.
This is the skill file I'd give an agent in an Agent OS so both scorecards update in one run.
GEO + AEO SKILL (one loop, two scorecards) 1. Load the buyer question list, the brand fact file and last run's log from shared memory. 2. For every question, record: answer box holder (AEO), names in the AI reply (GEO), pages cited (GEO). 3. Mark each question as: own the box, named, cited only, or missing. 4. Read the latest Search Console CSV and list the pages and topics already getting clicks. 5. For each missing question, pick the real case study from the test log that answers it best. 6. Draft one page: question as the heading, direct answer in the first two lines, then the case study, sources and numbers. 7. Draft one different-angle version for a second site or platform. 8. Flag every number, name, title, description, schema field and alt text for a human fact-check. 9. Save drafts and the log, then report the three biggest changes since the last run. NEVER: invent case studies or results, publish without approval, add "AI files" or special AI schema, stuff keywords, or promise AI placements.
The never line matters most, because an agent that invents a case study breaks the whole point of being the source.
In my GEO examples video, Google's AI Overview for "best geo expert" names me first and cites several of my pages.
In my Hermes GEO video, AI Mode lists me first when asked for the best GEO experts to follow in 2026, and it links to my sites.
One of my sites went from zero to more than 1,300 clicks a day, and two other sites are on the same path.
I call the system behind this the answer engine, and its three moves are be the source, be everywhere and be first.
Those are my results from my own screens, and they're not a promise for your site.

Google updated its page on using generative AI content on 1 October 2026.
It says it's "critical to manually factcheck and review all AI-generated content" before publishing.
That review also covers title elements, meta descriptions, structured data and image alt text.
So in an Agent OS, the agent drafts and flags while you check and approve.
If you want the full system rather than this quick start, it lives inside the AI Profit Boardroom.
You get my Agent OS, the SEO skill I use, the AI SEO automation section and four coaching calls a week with 3,400+ members.
My SEO skill is a checklist of about 100 points, and it writes everything from a case-study angle.
Nobody can guarantee what an AI answer will say, and that includes me.
AI answers change, so the scorecards will move up and down even when you're doing everything right.
An agent speeds up the drafting and logging, but the case studies and the fact-checks still have to come from you.

AEO is the older term for getting your page picked as the direct answer, as in featured snippets and voice assistants. GEO is the newer term for getting your brand named or cited inside answers that AI writes from several sources.
It comes from the paper GEO: Generative Engine Optimization by Pranjal Aggarwal and colleagues, first posted on arXiv on 16 November 2023 and accepted to KDD 2024.
I couldn't find one reliable source for who coined it or when. It is best described as the featured snippet and voice assistant era term.
Yes. The agent logs answer boxes and AI mentions in the same run, drafts answer-first pages from your case studies and flags facts for you to check by hand.
No. Google says there are no additional requirements, no special schema and no AI text files to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode.
No. It is a one-to-one call where my team looks at your site, your competitors and the keywords you're closest to winning, then gives you a custom game plan.
Save your question list, run the five-step quick start and let the agent keep both scorecards for you.

That's how I'd settle generative engine optimization vs answer engine optimization for any site.
