In ChatGPT Dots vs Muse, Dots win for work and Muse wins for everyday errands.
Dots are OpenAI's always-on agents for top ChatGPT plans, with their own cloud computers and more than 4,000 app connections.
Muse is Meta's personal agent, free to start but only in the US.
The question I keep hearing is which one deserves a place in how you work, so here is my verdict, the full comparison table, the rounds and how I fit both around an Agent OS.
Here is the full comparison, using only what OpenAI, Meta and the launch coverage have published.
| ChatGPT Dots | Meta Muse | |
|---|---|---|
| Who makes it | OpenAI. | Meta. |
| Launched | Announced at DevDay on 29 September 2026. | 8 September 2026. |
| Who can use it | Pro and Business Premium users in eligible markets, with Pro users in most of Europe, including the UK, made to wait. | Anyone in the United States. |

| Model | Launch coverage reports GPT-6 Astra. | Meta's Muse Spark family. |
| Where it works | Its own cloud computer and browser, and your laptop if you give permission. | Its own virtual machine per user, with Mac app control announced on 23 September. |
| Where you talk to it | The ChatGPT desktop app, mobile app and website, Slack, Microsoft Teams and voice calls. | The iOS and Android apps, muse.ai and WhatsApp. |
| Apps it connects to | More than 4,000 apps through ChatGPT plugins. | Partners including Stripe, Shopify, PayPal, Walmart, Expedia, GitHub and Notion. |

Dots are always-on ChatGPT agents, and OpenAI launched them at DevDay on 29 September 2026.
Each dot gets its own cloud computer and its own browser, so it can keep working on a goal without you prompting it every step.
You set a goal, the dot remembers it, notices when something changes and comes back to you when it needs a decision.
You can chat with a dot in the ChatGPT apps, in Slack or Microsoft Teams, or on a voice call, and OpenAI says texting is coming.
OpenAI says dots connect to more than 4,000 apps through plugins, and with your permission a dot can use your laptop as well as its own machine.
I went live on dots the day after DevDay, and the thing that struck me is how clearly it is aimed at work rather than errands.
Muse is Meta's personal AI agent, launched in the US on 8 September 2026.
It is built for everyday errands, long-term goals and purchases, and it keeps working after you close the app.
It runs on Meta's Muse Spark models, and every user's agent runs in its own virtual machine.
Muse pauses before irreversible actions, such as sending an email or paying for something, and asks you to confirm.
Payments go through single-use virtual cards via Stripe Link.
At Connect on 23 September, Meta added a Realtime Avatar and announced Mac app control and an email address for the agent.
Dots and Muse are both bets on the same shift.
For three years, AI mostly waited for you to type a prompt and then stopped.
Both of these products keep going after you walk away.
They hold a goal, they use their own computer to work towards it and they only come back when they need you.
That is the same idea behind an Agent OS, where agents work through a board of tasks while you do something else.
The difference is who owns the computer, the memory and the model.
With dots it is OpenAI, with Muse it is Meta, and with an Agent OS it is you.
Keep that question of ownership in mind as you read the rounds below.
Muse wins on reach, as long as you live in the US.
It has a free tier, so anyone there can try it today without paying.
Dots sit behind top-tier ChatGPT plans, and the first dot is included at no extra cost on those plans.
Here is the awkward bit for British readers like me.
Muse is US-only, and OpenAI says Pro users in most of Europe, including the UK, have to wait for dots.
So from the UK, dots depend on whether your plan and market are eligible, and Muse is not available at all.
Availability is moving fast for both products, so check the current plan pages before you make a decision.
What I have given you here is the position as of early October 2026.
This is the round that actually decides it for most people.
Dots win for work.
They live where work already happens, which is ChatGPT, Slack and Teams, and they plug into thousands of business apps.
Muse wins for life.
Its partner list is full of shopping, travel and delivery brands, and its whole design is about errands.
If your goal is "keep an eye on my pipeline and draft follow-ups", that is a dot job.
If your goal is "book dinner and reorder the dog food", that is a Muse job.
Both take guardrails seriously on paper, and both are brand new in practice.
Dots use approval gates for sensitive actions and let you set custom rules for what a dot may do.
Muse uses confirmation dialogs before irreversible actions and a permission system called Sentinel that separates reading from writing.
Muse has already had one public setback, because Amazon blocked it from its retail site on 21 September 2026.
OpenAI also had a safety story at DevDay, because it shelved a planned GPT-6.1 Astra upgrade after deceptive behaviour in testing, according to the launch coverage.
My rule for both is the same.
Do not let any agent spend money or message a client without a confirmation step you control.
Dots make sense if you already pay for a top-tier ChatGPT plan and your team works in Slack or Microsoft Teams.
They suit goals that run for days or weeks, such as watching a pipeline, chasing replies or keeping a report up to date.
They are also the better pick if you rely on lots of business apps, because the plugin catalogue is so large.
If you want an agent you can ring up and talk to about a goal, the voice call option is a real advantage.
Muse makes sense if you are in the US and want to start for free.
It suits personal errands, shopping and bookings far more than office work.
It is also the friendlier choice if you live in WhatsApp or want to watch the agent's browser as it works.
If you are outside the US, it is simply not an option yet.
An always-on agent is a new member of staff, so give it the same onboarding you would give a person.
Here is how I think about both from inside my own Agent OS.
Dots and Muse are front doors.
They are brilliant at being easy to reach, and they live on someone else's computers, on one company's models.
My Agent OS is the back office.
It runs on my machine, keeps one memory in my Obsidian vault and picks the right model for each job, whether that is Claude, Hermes, a free local model or a cheap decision model.
That matters for three reasons.
I already run Meta's Muse Spark 1.2 model inside the Agent OS through OpenRouter, and it now averages 7.55 across 50 build tasks on the live GoldieBench leaderboard.
So you do not have to choose a camp.
You can use a dot for a work goal that lives in Slack, Muse for errands if you are in the US, and keep the system that runs your business under your own control.
Pick ChatGPT Dots if you already pay for a top ChatGPT plan, you work in Slack or Teams and you want an agent chasing a business goal around the clock.
Pick Muse if you are in the US, you want a free way in and your jobs are personal errands.
If you run a business, treat both as helpers on the edge of your operation rather than the operation itself.
If you want the Agent OS I use as the back office, with the setup tutorials and four coaching calls a week, it is inside the AI Profit Boardroom.
For work, yes. Dots live in ChatGPT, Slack and Teams and connect to more than 4,000 apps. For personal errands in the US, Muse is the better and cheaper choice, with a free tier.
OpenAI includes the first dot at no extra cost on the plans that get it, starting with Pro and Business Premium in eligible markets.
OpenAI says Pro users in most of Europe, including the UK, will have to wait. Business Premium availability depends on eligible markets.
Launch coverage reports that dots run on GPT-6 Astra, after OpenAI shelved a planned GPT-6.1 Astra upgrade.
I would not put either at the centre yet. Use them for goals and errands at the edge, and keep client data, pipelines and anything that touches revenue in an Agent OS you control.
Use dots for work goals, Muse for US errands and your own Agent OS for the business itself.
That is my honest take on ChatGPT Dots vs Muse.
